Samsung is reportedly developing a new wearable smart device in the form of a ring that can be worn on the finger, according to South Korean news outlet The Elec, Samsung is working on a smart ring called “Galaxy Ring” in collaboration with the Japanese company “Mico,” which will be responsible for manufacturing the printed circuit boards used in the product.
The Galaxy Ring smart ring will have a traditional ring-like appearance but will include additional sensors to collect health data from the wearer and transmit it to a smartphone. Similar to smartwatches and fitness bands, the smart ring will be capable of measuring vital signs such as heart rate, tracking physical activities, monitoring sleep patterns, and offering other health-related features.
Several companies already produce smart rings available for purchase, including the Finnish company “Oura,” which has been manufacturing smart rings for years with prices starting from $300 USD, therefore, Samsung’s upcoming product is expected to directly compete with Oura rings.
While Samsung has begun developing its smart ring, the exact market launch date remains unknown, the company will make its decision on whether to proceed with production after reviewing and testing the initial prototype of the product.
Earlier rumors and media reports suggested Samsung’s plans to develop this product, and the company has already trademarked the name “Galaxy Ring” earlier this year, additionally, references to the smart ring were spotted in Samsung’s health application.
Furthermore, it is anticipated that Samsung will also introduce smart glasses featuring mixed reality capabilities to compete with Apple’s previously announced “Apple Glasses” expected to be released in 2024.
