In a stunning celestial display, a giant meteor illuminated the night skies over Portugal and Spain last Saturday, captivating millions with a brilliant blue fireball. Captured on video, the meteor streaked across the atmosphere, transforming the clouds into a bright neon-like blue for approximately seven seconds.
The European Space Agency (ESA) identified the meteor as likely being a fragment from a comet that entered Earth’s atmosphere at an altitude of about 60 kilometers, traveling at a speed of 2700 kilometers per hour.
Local authorities in Viseu, a city in central Portugal, received reports of an object descending from the sky. Despite efforts, officials have not yet located a potential crash site or confirmed any debris reaching the ground. ESA has deemed it unlikely that any fragments survived to land.
