Robert Fico, the head of the leaning party ‘Sameer’ which is known for its pro Russian standpoint and opposition to Western sanctions against Moscow assumed office recently. His tenure has been marked by stances, his strong disapproval of Ukraines NATO membership and his support for Kiev relinquishing territories to Russia as a resolution to the ongoing conflict. These positions have stirred debate both domestically and globally.

Following a halt in relations with Russia and Belarus in March 2022 Russias incursion into Ukraine, Slovakias Ministry of Culture announced the resumption of engagements, with these countries.
Fico has also backed Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban in preventing a €50 billion aid package to Ukraine showing a stance, against enforced sanctions concerning matters of sovereignty.
