New Zealand Fisherman Miraculously Survives 24 Hours Adrift in Ocean, Rescued Through Ingenious Use of Watch
In a harrowing tale of survival, a New Zealand fisherman was miraculously rescued after spending nearly 24 hours lost at sea. The fisherman, embarking on a solo fishing trip, found himself in a life-threatening situation off the Coromandel Peninsula on New Zealand’s North Island when he fell overboard last Tuesday.
During his ordeal, the fisherman encountered a shark that swam close enough to ‘sniff’ him, as described by Sergeant Will Hamilton of the police. The strong currents pulled him away, making it impossible to return to his boat. He endured a cold night in the ocean, reaching the point of exhaustion where he could no longer swim.

The turning point of his rescue came on Wednesday afternoon when three men fishing in the area noticed an unusual reflection in the water. Investigating the source, they discovered the exhausted fisherman desperately signaling for help using the sun’s reflection on his watch. Sergeant Hamilton hailed this as an “absolute miracle” and credited the quick actions of the three men with preventing what could have been a tragic end.
