As 2023 draws to a close, our planet is set to witness a cosmic ballet. NASA’s vigilant eyes, both terrestrial and extraterrestrial, have identified five asteroids that will make close approaches to Earth in the coming days. This celestial lineup is not just a testament to the vastness of space but a reminder of our place within it.
Asteroid 2023 YD: The Trailblazer
Leading this cosmic parade is Asteroid 2023 YD, set to pass by Earth on December 28. This space rock, stretching 28 meters in width, will cruise by at a comfortable distance of approximately 605,000 kilometers, traveling at a brisk 35,790 kilometers per hour. Despite being larger than the Chelyabinsk meteor, which caused significant damage in 2013, 2023 YD poses no threat to Earth.
Using ground and space telescopes, NASA shed light on 5 asteroids that are expected to pass by Earth in the coming days, until the last day of the year 2023.

The Apollo Group Enigma
These five asteroids belong to the Apollo group of Near-Earth Asteroids (NEAs), named after the 1862 Apollo asteroid, one of the largest ever to pass by Earth. This group, known for their Earth-crossing orbits, continues to captivate astronomers and the public alike.
Asteroid 2023 YZ: The Distant Traveler
Following suit, Asteroid 2023 YZ will make its closest approach on December 29, at a distance of about 308 million kilometers. This 27-meter-wide asteroid hurtles towards Earth at 20,199 kilometers per hour, showcasing the dynamic nature of our solar system.
Asteroid 2023 YM: The Close Voyager
On December 30, Asteroid 2023 YM, measuring approximately 37 meters in width, will approach Earth from a distance of around 3.8 million kilometers. Traveling at a velocity of 44,491 kilometers per hour, it highlights the constant motion of these celestial wanderers.
The Final Pass: Asteroids 2023 XE12 and 2021 AM6
The year’s end will witness two more asteroids gracing our skies. The 40-meter-wide 2023 XE12 will pass at about 5.6 million kilometers on December 31, moving at 42,386 kilometers per hour. Capping off this astronomical event, the 16-meter-wide 2021 AM6 will make its closest approach at a distance of 7 million kilometers.
This series of near-Earth encounters serves as a reminder of the dynamic universe we inhabit and the need for continued vigilance in monitoring our cosmic neighborhood.
