San Antonio, Texas – Commuters in San Antonio had an unexpected encounter on Thursday morning when a tornado briefly touched down on the city’s East Side, causing minor damage and prompting swift responses from authorities.
Around 8 a.m. local time, a weak tornado was sighted near Joint Base San Antonio-Sam Houston, as confirmed by the military installation and reports on social media. The incident unfolded during the morning commute, catching many by surprise.
Joint Base San Antonio weather has confirmed a brief, very weak tornado touched down on JBSA-Fort Sam Houston around 8 a.m. this morning. There are no reported injuries, but downed trees and some damage to vehicles have been reported.

Meteorologist Brad Sowder from Fox San Antonio also corroborated the tornado sighting and noted reports of damage in the Terrell Hills area.

Although there were reports of damage near Brackenridge Park, the San Antonio Zoo took to social media to assure the community that none of the animals under their care were harmed. In a tweet, zoo officials stated, “Let the community and zoo lovers know that all the animals and staff are safe and secure, and that we did not suffer any damage.”

Despite numerous eyewitness accounts and video evidence, the National Weather Service (NWS) has not yet officially confirmed whether a tornado touched down in San Antonio or determined its position on the Fujita scale, which measures tornado intensity.
NWS did report that parts of San Antonio received approximately 1/10th of an inch of rain as of 7 a.m. However, these measurements could change as precipitation continues throughout the morning.

The tornado incident, while causing some disruption, fortunately resulted in no reported injuries and only minor damage. The affected areas are now under investigation by the National Weather Service to ascertain the tornado’s strength and official classification.
