Brussels in Turmoil as Tunisian Attacker Takes to Social Media: A Public Manhunt Unfolds Amidst Soccer Match Disruption
Brussels has been thrust into a heightened state of alert as authorities scramble to locate a gunman who has taken to social media to claim responsibility for a deadly attack that disrupted a major soccer match. The man, identified as a 45-year-old Tunisian named “Abdul Salam L,” is still at large, with his last known appearance captured on video as he fled the crime scene on a motorbike.
Prime Minister Alexander De Croo referred to the assault as a “cowardly act,” urging his citizens to stand united in the fight against terrorism. The attack took place near the Sanktilet square in the northern neighborhoods of the Belgian capital, just before a qualifier match between Belgium and Sweden for the 2024 European Cup in football.
The assailant unleashed four rounds of gunfire, killing two Swedish fans before fleeing. Players from the Swedish team refused to resume the match after half-time. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, condemned the “despicable attack,” reiterating her call for unity in the fight against terrorism.

Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni echoed these sentiments, denouncing all forms of violence and extremism.

The gunman has taken a brazen approach, uploading videos on social media platforms before and after the act. Speaking in Arabic with a Tunisian accent, he claims allegiance to the terrorist organization ISIS. Authorities are still combing through the evidence as they officially launch an investigation into the incident.

As the authorities intensify their manhunt for “Abdul Salam L,” the case poses serious questions on the use of social media by perpetrators to claim responsibility and on the readiness of security agencies to prevent such acts in the heart of Europe. The rapid public condemnation from European leaders suggests that the incident will likely have ramifications that extend beyond Belgium’s borders.
