The United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Francesca Albanese, stated that a significant portion of the besieged population in Gaza is facing annihilation.
Thousands have been killed or injured due to the continuous Israeli bombardment since the Palestinian resistance launched Operation Storm of Al-Aqsa.
Albanese added, “What is happening is that a large part of the Palestinian population in Gaza is being eliminated, not unlike what happened before, but with increasing brutality.”
Commenting on Israel’s decision to cut off the supply of water, electricity, food, and other essential facilities to Gaza, the UN Special Rapporteur emphasized that starving and depriving the besieged population in Gaza of necessities constitute war crimes and crimes against humanity.
She also stated that Israel’s comprehensive bombing of Gaza puts its residents, who are held by Hamas, at risk.
Albanese described the situation in Gaza as catastrophic and called for an immediate ceasefire.
She urged Israel to stop shelling civilians and emphasized the need to open humanitarian corridors for the wounded and those in critical condition in Gaza.
The UN official noted that providing aid is a priority and called for the release of what she described as “hostages” (Israelis), pointing out that the West bears a significant responsibility due to its unconditional support for Israel.
Meanwhile, the United Nations reported that the situation in Gaza is unprecedented in the face of widespread Israeli attacks, while the World Food Programme mentioned that food, medicine, and electricity supplies in the region are running out.
The number of displaced persons has reached 423,000.
Meanwhile, the United Nations announced that over 423,000 Palestinians have been displaced from their homes in Gaza due to the ongoing intense Israeli airstrikes.
Earlier, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) stated that tens of thousands sought refuge in its schools in Gaza to escape Israeli airstrikes.
On another note, the United Nations has urgently launched a $294 million fundraising appeal to assist the populations in both Gaza and the occupied West Bank.
