In an election poll, Trump is leading Biden by a 20-point margin among voters under the age of 35
According to a recent poll conducted by the Washington Post and ABC News, young Americans have shown a strong preference for Donald Trump over Joe Biden in the upcoming 2024 election. This preference is particularly evident among voters under the age of 35, with Trump leading Biden by a significant 20-point margin.
Out of the 18 to 35-year-olds surveyed, 53 percent expressed their support for Trump, while only 38 percent backed Biden. These numbers indicate a decline in Biden’s popularity among young people compared to a previous Post-ABC poll conducted in February, where he received backing from 43 percent of young voters.
These findings are concerning for the Biden administration, especially considering that young voters played a crucial role in his victory in the 2020 election. The campaign is relying on high youth turnout once again to secure success in 2024. To address this issue, Vice President Kamala Harris has been sent on a tour of college campuses across the country, aiming to energize and engage the youngest voters.
In addition to the decline in support among young people, the poll also reveals a narrowing lead for Biden among ethnic minorities. His advantage over Trump in this demographic has diminished to just nine percent, while Trump has made gains.
Although these poll results may seem contradictory to other recent surveys, they raise important concerns for the Biden administration. With Trump enjoying stronger support among young Americans and making gains among ethnic minorities, it is crucial for the Biden campaign to address these challenges and find effective strategies to maintain and expand their voter base.
Biden Faces Challenging Road Ahead
The two contenders are set to face off in a rematch of their 2020 race next year, and current indications suggest that Mr. Trump is the clear frontrunner for the Republican nomination.
In this scenario, a recent Post-ABC poll revealed that Mr. Trump would defeat Mr. Biden by a margin of 10 points. However, it is important to note that other recent polls have suggested that the 2024 contest is much closer and could be considered a virtual tie.
Mr. Trump proudly shared these poll results on his social media platform, Truth Social.
The Washington Post has suggested that this figure may be an outlier due to the unique composition of Trump’s and Biden’s respective coalitions as represented in the survey.
Nonetheless, the polling data indicates that Mr. Biden will face an arduous journey to secure re-election next November, with his approval ratings for handling the economy and immigration reaching all-time lows.
Throughout much of his first term, Mr. Biden’s overall job approval rating has consistently been below satisfactory levels, and it currently stands at a concerning 37 percent.
According to the Post-ABC poll, an alarming 56 percent of Americans disapprove of Mr. Biden’s performance, a higher disapproval rate than reported by Reuters and the polling aggregator FiveThirtyEight.
Economic hardship seems to be a significant influence, as an unprecedented number of Americans express that their financial situation has worsened under President Biden’s administration.
At the same time, voters appear to have a more favorable view of former President Trump’s single term in office, rating him 10 points higher than they did when he departed from his position.
The survey, which encompassed 1,006 American adults across the country, was conducted from September 15th to September 20th.
Despite the numbers, Biden insiders express optimism. During discussions with donors, the president’s team has started presenting his case for re-election and directly addressing concerns about his age.
They are of the belief that winning only three states – Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania – will guarantee Mr. Biden’s victory.
However, they also believe that there are several other possible paths to re-election, involving four additional states – Nevada, Arizona, North Carolina, and Georgia.
Delaware senator Chris Coons, who is a trusted confidant of Mr. Biden, acknowledged that recent polls have been “more worrisome” than what the campaign had expected.
