Wellington, New Zealand – A 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of New Zealand’s South Island on Wednesday, causing minor damage but no injuries or fatalities.
The quake struck at 9:14 a.m. local time, about 77 miles west of Christchurch. It had a depth of 6.8 miles.
The New Zealand Earthquake Commission said it received 15,000 claims for damage, mostly for minor items such as broken windows and cracked plaster.

There were no reports of structural damage to buildings or infrastructure.
The earthquake was felt across much of the South Island, as well as in Wellington, the capital of New Zealand.
New Zealand is located in the Ring of Fire, a region of the Pacific Ocean where tectonic plates collide and cause earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
