USA declares state of emergency due to Hurricane Lee in Canada

The US National Hurricane Center (NHC) revealed that Hurricane Lee hit the Nova Scotia region of Canada on Saturday, as US experts indicated that the hurricane is moving over the Atlantic Ocean, amid its threat to the northeastern United States and the east coast of Canada.

Change in hurricane intensity

Experts believe that the hurricane will be weaker in the states of New England, where it will turn into a posttropical hurricane, while the intensity will increase in coastal provinces to turn into a strong hurricane.

The center said, in a statement on its page on the social network «X» (formerly Twitter»: «Posttropical cyclone hit the Nova Scotia area around 16:00 local time».

Hurricane speed of movement

According to meteorologists, the cyclone is now moving at 35 kilometers per hour, with winds of up to 110 kilometers per hour.

The hurricane caused flooding on the coast and heavy rains across Canada’s Atlantic region, and in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia, about 120,000 people were without power on Saturday due to falling trees due to strong winds, and about 20,000 people suffered power outages in the province of «New Brunswick».

Declaration of a state of emergency

At the same time, the administration of US President Joe Biden announced the declaration of a state of emergency in the states of Maine and Massachusetts, while working to provide federal assistance to them.
