New Delhi, September 12, 2023 – India’s Kerala state has reported two deaths due to the Nipah virus, a deadly disease that can cause severe respiratory illness and neurological symptoms.
A senior official from the National Institute of Virology (NIV) confirmed the deaths on Tuesday, saying that one person died in September and the other on August 30. The official, who requested anonymity, said that two other people from the same family are suspected to be infected and their samples are being analyzed.
The NIV has sent a report of the deaths to the Union Ministry of Health.
Nipah virus is a zoonotic disease, meaning it can spread from animals to humans. It is typically spread through contact with the saliva, urine, or feces of infected bats, fruit bats, or pigs.
The first Nipah virus outbreak in Kerala occurred in 2018, resulting in 17 deaths. The virus has also been detected in other parts of India, as well as in Bangladesh, Malaysia, and Singapore.

There is no specific treatment for Nipah virus, but supportive care can help to improve the chances of survival.
In response to the recent deaths, the Kerala government has ordered mass testing in the area where the infections occurred. The government has also imposed quarantine measures in the area.
Health officials are urging people to take precautions to avoid contact with bats, fruit bats, and pigs. They are also advising people to wash their hands frequently and to avoid contact with people who are sick.
