Google Introduces AI-Powered Video Summaries on YouTube

A support page dated July 31st revealed that Google has started using Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to automatically generate video summaries on the YouTube platform.

According to the page, these summaries will only be displayed alongside a limited number of English-language videos, and only a limited number of users will be able to view them.

The summaries will appear on the watch and search pages of YouTube, aiming to provide a brief overview of the video content without replacing the current human-written descriptions.

The support page stated: “We have begun testing automatically generated AI-powered summaries on YouTube, making it easier for you to quickly read a summary of a video and determine if it’s suitable for you or not.”

Users can usually subscribe to participate in YouTube experiments at YouTube.com/new, however, participation in some experiments may require the user to be a subscriber to the paid service (YouTube Premium).

This new YouTube experiment is one of the artificial intelligence initiatives launched by Google, as the American tech giant takes strides to leverage the potential of emerging technologies.

It’s worth noting that Google had announced a new feature in the Google Play Store during the Google I/O 2023 developer conference in May of the previous year, aiming to use AI to summarize user reviews of applications.

Other companies have also attempted to use artificial intelligence to automatically generate content summaries online, for instance, the service “Artifact” recently launched a feature to summarize news articles using AI.
