Sony Announces Over 40 Million Units Sold for PlayStation 5 Despite COVID-19 Challenges

Sony has officially revealed that it has sold more than 40 million units of its PlayStation 5 gaming console since its launch in November 2020, the company achieved this impressive sales figure despite facing “unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and supply chain issues,” as stated in their official statement.

Jim Ryan, President and CEO of Sony, expressed gratitude to the gaming community for their patience while the company worked on resolving these challenges, he also mentioned that the PlayStation 5 is now readily available with a healthy stock, finally meeting the pent-up demand for the console.

During the current year’s first quarter, Sony tripled its shipments of the PlayStation 5 compared to the previous year, delivering 6.3 million units as opposed to 2 million units in the previous year.

Sony’s PlayStation 5 dominates the video game console market, outpacing Microsoft’s Xbox and Nintendo’s devices in sales.

The platform offers more than 2,500 games across various genres, including newly released popular titles like Final Fantasy XVI, Diablo IV, and Street Fighter 6.

Sony shared a list of around 40 different games that have impressed players the most within its official statement, the list includes titles like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, FIFA 23, RESIDENT EVIL 4, Dead Space, Hitman 3, and others.

The PlayStation 5 also introduced new technologies, such as haptic feedback in the DualSense controller, customizable console and controller colors, and Sony’s PlayStation VR 2 headset for immersive virtual reality gaming experiences.
