Harnessing Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Fishery Management in Saudi Arabia

The Saudi Arabian government aims to enhance the sustainability of the fishing industry in the Kingdom and achieve self-sufficiency in fish production, currently, the country imports approximately 60% of its consumed fish, to promote environmental sustainability and food security, the government has made significant investments in the aquaculture sector as a means to compensate for the decline in wild fish stocks in the Red Sea.

Scientific Research and Artificial Intelligence in Fishery Management

King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) is conducting scientific research on the use of artificial intelligence techniques to enhance fishery management and ensure the sustainability of this vital food resource, these projects are supported in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture in Saudi Arabia, the research aims to make progress in the application of artificial intelligence techniques to improve fishery management and preserve its sustainability.

The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Achieving Fishery Sustainability

Artificial intelligence plays a significant role in assessing the sustainability of the fishing industry by analyzing data related to fish populations, fishing practices, and environmental factors, machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques are utilized to develop predictive models that estimate future fish stock levels and evaluate the impact of different fishing practices, by using these tools and techniques, the sustainability of fishery resources can be maintained, striking a balance between industry needs and the preservation of fish resources through sustainable methods.

Environmental Sustainability and Future Challenges

Artificial intelligence techniques integrate data from various sources, such as fishing records, vessel monitoring systems, and market information, to identify unregulated fishing activities and analyze the sustainability of the entire supply chain comprehensively, artificial intelligence contributes to identifying endangered and vulnerable species by analyzing data and providing valuable insights for making sustainable decisions, through these technologies, the sustainability of the fishing industry can be enhanced, ensuring a balance between industry needs and the protection of fish resources in the future.

Future Efforts and Improving Fishery Management

The efforts invested in using artificial intelligence techniques in the fishing industry in Saudi Arabia play a crucial role in enhancing the sustainability of fish resources, by combining scientific research with artificial intelligence techniques, endangered species can be identified, and necessary actions can be taken to maintain the ecological balance in the oceans and ensure food security in the Kingdom, these efforts represent an important step towards promoting sustainable fishing practices and preserving fish resources for future generations, they reflect the Kingdom’s commitment to the development of the fishing industry and the conservation of its rich marine environment in the region.
