Alef Automotive’s Flying Car Receives FAA Certification for Testing: A Step Closer to the First Road-Ready Flying Car
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has recently issued a special airworthiness certificate to Alef Automotive’s groundbreaking vehicle, the “Model A.” This fully electric flying car, developed by the California-based startup, is designed to operate on both public roads and in the air, all while maintaining the appearance and parking capabilities of a conventional automobile.
Equipped with vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) technology, the Model A can accommodate one or two occupants. The innovative vehicle boasts a road range of 200 miles and a flying range of 110 miles. Alef Automotive intends to market the Model A for $300,000, with initial deliveries projected for late 2025.
Although numerous companies are working on all-electric VTOL aircraft, Alef’s Model A distinguishes itself through its dual functionality. This unique feature allows the vehicle to transition seamlessly between road and air travel.
Alef Automotive’s CEO, Jim Dukhovny, expressed excitement about the FAA certification, stating, “It allows us to move closer to bringing people an environmentally friendly and faster commute, saving individuals and companies hours each week.”
As outlined on the company’s website, the flying car will be certified as a low-speed vehicle, restricting its road speed to approximately 25 miles per hour. Alef expects that drivers seeking swifter transportation will take advantage of the vehicle’s flight capabilities. However, before the Model A can be used on public roads, it must first receive approval from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The development of the Model A began in 2015 when four friends, inspired by the “Back to the Future” film series, established Alef Automotive. After successfully completing an automated test flight in 2018 and a full-size prototype flight the following year, the company needed the FAA’s special airworthiness certificate to advance its research and development efforts.
Thus far, Alef Automotive has received over 400 refundable pre-orders for the flying car. Customers can choose between placement in the general queue for $150 or the priority queue for $1,500.
