OpenAI, the creator of the highly popular chatbot ChatGPT, has revealed plans to establish a marketplace where developers can sell their AI models built on top of OpenAI’s own AI technology. This development was reported by news site The Information on Tuesday, with insights from sources knowledgeable about the discussions within the company.
Enterprise customers who utilize ChatGPT frequently customize the technology to suit their specific requirements, ranging from detecting financial fraud in online transactions to providing insights on specific markets using internal documents. According to the news report, creators of such models would have the opportunity to offer their solutions to other businesses through OpenAI’s proposed marketplace.
During a recent meeting with developers in London, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman shared these potential plans, as stated in the report. By establishing a marketplace, OpenAI aims to not only compete with app stores operated by its customers and technology partners like Salesforce and Microsoft but also to extend the reach of its technology to a wider customer base.
The Information also disclosed that two of OpenAI’s customers, Aquant, a manufacturer software provider specializing in guiding customers through device maintenance and repairs, and Khan Academy, an education app creator, have expressed interest in offering their AI models powered by ChatGPT on OpenAI’s marketplace.
Since its launch in late 2022, ChatGPT has been embraced by hundreds of businesses seeking to automate tasks and enhance efficiency. Companies are engaged in a race to deliver new tools and capabilities to their customers based on the advanced large language models offered by AI software like ChatGPT.
