WhatsApp has announced the introduction of Channels, a new feature currently in development that will enable users to receive crucial updates from individuals and organizations privately and securely. The upcoming feature will be available for Android, iOS, and Desktop in a future update of WhatsApp beta.
In a recent blog post, WhatsApp unveiled the new Channels feature, which aims to provide a dependable and private method for users to receive important updates from the people and organizations that matter to them. Mark Zuckerberg also shared the announcement on Facebook, revealing that Channels will initially be rolled out in Singapore and Colombia.
Channels will be accessible through a dedicated “Updates” tab, separate from regular chats, allowing unlimited users to easily follow their favorite channels. Content such as text, photos, videos, stickers, and polls can be shared by channel admins with their followers, making the feature valuable for various purposes, such as hobby updates, sports team news, and local official announcements.
WhatsApp is also developing a searchable directory, which will make it easier for users to find and follow channels that align with their interests. Channel admins and followers will have their phone numbers and profile photos concealed, ensuring the protection of personal information. Users have full control over which channels to follow, and channels are considered private tools for broadcasting information.
In line with the idea that channel updates need not be permanent, WhatsApp plans to store channel history on their servers for up to 30 days, with new tools in development to make updates disappear from devices even faster. Admins will be able to optionally block screenshots and forwards from their channels.
Admins can choose to make their channel discoverable in the directory or keep it hidden. While channels are not end-to-end encrypted by default, WhatsApp is exploring the possibility of introducing limited-audience end-to-end encrypted channels in the future, particularly for organizations like non-profits or health institutions.
WhatsApp will initially roll out Channels in Colombia and Singapore with select partners and organizations to refine the user experience. We will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
