NVIDIA Unveils the GH200 Chip with HBM3e Memory at SIGGRAPH 2023

At the SIGGRAPH conference on April 8, 2023, NVIDIA announced a groundbreaking addition to its hardware lineup, the GH200 chip, marking the world’s first graphics processing unit (GPU) to feature HBM3e memory, this advanced platform is designed to spearhead accelerated computing, tackling the most complex tasks in generative AI with unprecedented efficiency.

The GH200 Platform:

NVIDIA’s GH200 platform is meticulously engineered to address the increasing demands in the high-performance computing (HPC) market, blending GPU and CPU capabilities into a semi-integrated design, While primarily aimed at large data centers, the innovative GH200 chip has made its way into desktop AI workstations through GPTshop.ai, offering unparalleled computing power to those willing to invest $41,000.

Desktop Workstation Specifications:

The Grace Hopper (GH200) desktop workstation boasts a 72-core CPU based on the Arm Neoverse V2 architecture, coupled with 480 GB of LPDDR5X memory and a memory bandwidth of 512 GB/s, the H200 GPU, built on the Hopper architecture, features 132 SM units equivalent to 16,896 CUDA cores and 528 Tensor cores. Notably, the workstation is available in both HBM3 and the newer HBM3e memory versions.

Memory Configurations and Bandwidth:

Choosing the HBM3 version provides 96 GB of memory with a bandwidth of 4 TB/s, while the HBM3e option offers 144 GB of memory with an impressive 5 TB/s bandwidth, this enhancement significantly boosts the workstation’s ability to process and analyze data at extraordinary speeds.

Cooling and Additional Features:

The workstation incorporates cooling solutions from Noctua and offers optional add-ons like NVIDIA’s Bluefield-3 network card, ConnectX-7, an 8 TB SSD, a 30 TB HDD, a mouse and keyboard set, and an NVIDIA RTX 4060 card for ray tracing support.

Operating System Compatibility:

Ubuntu is the sole operating system choice for this workstation due to the compatibility issues Arm CPUs face with Windows, this limitation emphasizes the workstation’s specialized nature and its focus on maximizing performance in Linux-based environments.
