Humane, founded by former Apple designers Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno, has introduced its inaugural product, the AI Pin, priced at $700, this magnetic pin attaches to clothing and comes with a $24 monthly subscription, offering unlimited data and phone calls.
Chaudhri, who spent 20 years at Apple leading the design of the iPhone’s main screen, and Bongiorno, a key player in developing software for products like the iPhone, iPad, and Mac, have focused on integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into daily life without overshadowing human experiences.
Humane aims for AI Pin to replace smartphones, allowing users to make calls, send texts, and search for information using voice commands, the wearable device features a laser screen that turns the user’s hand into a small display for showing time, date, or other relevant information.
The device operates on a voice, touch, or gesture interaction basis and does not constantly listen or record until activated by user interaction, it relies on users’ voices, touches, gestures, or the laser screen for input, users are required to pay a $24 monthly subscription to T-Mobile, in addition to the initial device cost.
In a 10-minute video on the company’s website, Chaudhri explained, “There are no wake words, so the device doesn’t listen or record all the time, and it doesn’t do anything until you interact with it, interaction comes from your voice, your touch, your gestures, or the laser screen.”
Humane previously raised eyebrows in March when it announced a $100 million funding round from Microsoft, LG, and Tiger Global, even before unveiling any product, the company has raised over $200 million overall, with contributions from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff.
AI Pin, equipped with a 13-megapixel camera and a speaker, can capture photos or videos with a double click, users can view these media files via Humane’s web app, the device also has real-time translation capabilities for spoken Spanish and English conversations.
Humane has partnered with Microsoft and OpenAI for AI technology, allowing users to access AI services directly from the internet, the device’s primary function is to connect with AI models through the company’s AI Mic program, access to ChatGPT is highlighted as one of the device’s key features.
The device runs on an operating system called Cosmos, designed to automatically route queries to the correct tools without requiring users to download and manage applications.
Starting from November 16, Humane will begin accepting orders for AI Pin. Chaudhri and Bongiorno demonstrated some of the device’s features in a video, discussing the technology behind it, utilizing Qualcomm chips.
In summary, AI Pin aims to seamlessly integrate AI into user’s lives, providing a unique and advanced wearable experience.
