Apple is reportedly planning to launch a new version of its wireless over-ear headphones, the “AirPods Max,” in 2024. According to a recent report from Bloomberg, Apple intends to upgrade the AirPods Max by adding a USB-C port for charging and introducing new color options.
Currently, the American tech giant does not have broad plans to overhaul the headphones. However, these plans may change in the future.
Apple aims to upgrade the headphones to comply with European Union regulations, which require companies to provide products with USB-C ports to standardize charging across all products and accessories.
This expected upgrade mirrors what Apple did with the second generation of its in-ear headphones, the “AirPods Pro,” which added a USB-C port while keeping the internal components intact in September of last year. Apple initially unveiled the wireless over-ear headphones, the AirPods Max, at the end of 2020.
Since then, the company has not released any subsequent versions, while the in-ear “AirPods” have seen several hardware and software feature updates.
The upcoming version of the AirPods Max might be underwhelming, based on the information mentioned in the Bloomberg report.
This means it may not feature the latest H2 processor or the U1 chip, potentially missing out on several important features that the company offers in its newer headphone models.
It’s worth noting that Apple currently offers the AirPods Max to the public at a price point of up to $550 USD.
