Adobe has officially launched the artificial intelligence-powered photo editor, “Project Stardust,” at the MAX conference, offering a sneak peek into what the next generation of AI-driven photo editing software might look like.
This announcement follows an earlier leak of the full release of the AI-powered photo editor.
Project Stardust empowers users to easily remove objects and people from a scene, change backgrounds, and more, thanks to the support of the Firefly Model 2.
The core idea behind Project Stardust is to allow anyone to get creative with photo editing using Adobe’s artificial intelligence tools.
Project Stardust currently serves as a public preview, showcasing some of Adobe’s in-development technologies that may or may not make their way into a final product.
Given that Project Stardust incorporates many AI-based tools built on the Firefly model, we can expect further developments in the near future, combining Adobe’s object recognition models with existing AI-enhanced features such as content-aware fill.
Project Stardust shares many similarities with what Google aims to achieve with Magic Editor for Android, making both tools about simplifying what used to be labor-intensive photo editing tasks.
Users can either upload their own photos or let Firefly analyze and automatically generate layers for different objects it identifies.
The innovative photo editor automatically recognizes individual objects in images, allowing users to manipulate them easily.
Moving objects around is as simple as drag and drop, with AI filling in the gaps. Adding new objects to the scene is also effortless, offering users four different placement options for each claim.
The new tool allows users to isolate or manipulate objects within images or even entirely remove them using artificial intelligence. Typically, this process involved complex lasso tool operations in Photoshop, but Project Stardust streamlines it, treating objects as separate layers.
The photo editor includes features similar to the context-aware taskbar that appeared earlier this year in Photoshop, helping anticipate next moves in the design process.
Adobe mentioned that there are over ten different AI models powering Project Stardust’s diverse functionalities. Through Project Stardust, Adobe aims to maintain its leading role in the technology industry, particularly in the development of advanced editing tools.
