Apple is actively addressing the issue of weight in its Vision Pro mixed reality glasses, with plans to make future models significantly lighter, the company’s engineering teams are hard at work preparing the Vision Pro glasses for release.
The current model is notably heavy, weighing approximately 450 grams, this weight has been deemed excessively burdensome by some users, even during short periods of use, leading to neck strain due to the size and weight.
For the current model, Apple is considering a fix that includes an overhead strap, as previously reported. However, there is limited room for improvement in terms of the weight of the current model, apart from attempting to provide greater support.
Apple is now developing the next iteration of Vision Pro, with a specific focus on making it lighter and more compact, ensuring comfort during extended wear. In addition to weight, Apple may also redesign the glasses to be more accommodating for those who already wear prescription eyeglasses.
The upcoming headsets won’t have sufficient space for regular eyeglasses. Instead, Apple has collaborated with Zeiss to create magnetic prescription lenses that attach to the Vision Pro display.
The solution Apple is proposing for eyeglass wearers involves storing the optional lenses in retail stores, creating display management issues and turning its stores into healthcare providers, which presents several related problems.
Apple might choose to sell future headsets with pre-installed prescription lenses to simplify usage, although doing so could limit the headset’s versatility when shared with others or if the user’s vision changes.
One possible solution could be augmented reality glasses that overlay information on the lenses. In August, the company filed patents indicating an interest in manufacturing an adjustable virtual or augmented reality display to correct a person’s vision.
