TikTok has introduced a new tool that allows creators to classify AI-generated content, as the platform begins testing other methods for automatically labeling AI-generated content.
This move comes in response to the increasing number of creators using artificial intelligence for artistic expression and a broader push for transparency regarding the involvement of AI in content creation.
The company explained that it felt the need to provide AI classification because AI-generated content can confuse or mislead viewers.
TikTok has updated its policy for handling synthetic media, which requires individuals to classify AI-generated content that includes images, audio, or highly modified content, like deepfakes, to help viewers place the video in context and prevent the spread of misleading information.
The platform allows creators to remove AI-generated content that has not been classified, the new tool makes it easier for creators to comply with TikTok’s current policy on synthetic media and also to classify any other content that is entirely AI-generated or significantly altered using AI.
TikTok does not expect content creators to retroactively classify previously uploaded videos.
When a content creator uses the new tool, TikTok displays a message below the username in the video stating that the content has been classified as AI-generated.
The platform will not penalize content creators for not classifying AI-generated content that does not fall under its current synthetic media policy.
Additionally, TikTok is developing a way to automatically detect and classify AI-generated content, starting this week, it will begin testing AI-generated content labeling that will be applied to any content discovered to be edited or generated by AI.
TikTok explained that it is testing various AI detection models while evaluating source partnerships to help platforms better detect AI and include AI labeling directly within the content itself.
The company is also planning to rename all AI effects by explicitly including the term “AI” in their names.
In the coming weeks, TikTok will release educational videos and resources to help users better understand artificial intelligence.
