In a thrilling match on Sunday the Spanish national team triumphed over their English counterparts to secure their first-ever Women’s World Cup championship.
Olga Carmona scored the only goal of the final game with a magnificent shot inside the box in the 29th minute. Spain came close to doubling their lead, but their star player, Jennifer Hermoso, missed a penalty in the second half.
With over 75,000 supporters in attendance at the Sydney Football Stadium in Australia the Spanish women made history by claiming their first-ever World Cup title.
The result came as a “shock” to followers of women’s football, who had expected England’s Lionesses to emerge as champions given the recent dominance of English women’s football.
Prior to Sunday’s triumph, Spain’s women’s team had a relatively “modest” history, never advancing past the round of 16 in previous World Cup tournaments. This marked only their third-ever participation in the global event.
The Japanese forward Hinata Miyazawa finished as the top scorer of the tournament netting 5 goals.
It is worth noting that Spain suffered a humiliating 0-4 defeat against Japan in the group stage. However, they regrouped and bounced back, eliminating Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Sweden to reach the final match.
