In February of last year the police and prosecutors dropped all criminal charges against Greenwood who was suspended by United in January 2022 following allegations of attempted rape and assault in October of the previous year.

Media reports previously indicated that United had decided to reintegrate Greenwood into the first team at the start of the new season, though the club has now clarified that the decision is still pending. In a statement on their website, the club said:

“After all charges against Mason Greenwood were dropped in February 2023 United conducted a comprehensive investigation into the allegations against him.”
“Throughout this process, the victim’s safety and perspective were central to the club’s investigation and we respect her right to remain anonymous for life.”
“We also have responsibilities towards Mason as an individual working with us, a young player who has grown up in the club since he was seven years old and now has a partner as a new parent.”
“The management will come to a decision in the near future regarding the striker who has represented England.”
“Contrary to media speculation, the decision has not been made yet and is currently undergoing intense internal discussions, ultimately led by the CEO.”
“Once the decision is made, it will be communicated to both internal and external stakeholders of the club.”

Greenwood who rose through Manchester United’s youth academy, made his debut in 2019 at the age of 17.

He was a regular player in the first team during the previous season, featuring in 18 matches in the Premier League, with his last appearance on January 22, 2022, against West Ham United, before his suspension.

Greenwood has represented England on one occasion, back in September 2020.

In February 2022, sportswear company “Nike” terminated its sponsorship deal with Greenwood following the allegations, leading to his removal from certain editions of the video game “FIFA 22.”
