Spanish Tennis Star Paula Badosa Confirms Relationship with Greek Tennis Pro Stefanos Tsitsipas
After days of rumors surrounding the romantic involvement between the two athletes due to intimate pictures shared on their social media, the Spanish tennis player confirms the relationship to a magazine: “Yes, I’m dating him.”
It all started with a change in their Spotify profile pictures, where Paula Badosa and Stefanos Tsitsipas suddenly appeared together in a single image. The Spanish tennis player was then spotted in the stands at the recent Roland Garros, an event she could not participate in due to a vertebra fracture sustained during the Rome tournament. Badosa was seen enjoying the Greek athlete’s matches—whom was eliminated in the quarterfinals against Carlos Alcaraz. Subsequently, the pair shared several videos and photos on their respective social media accounts, showing moments of intimacy in a pool or at a restaurant in Dubai. These posts fueled rumors and news of a budding relationship. On Wednesday, the new couple of the season was confirmed, with Paula Badosa herself making the announcement to a magazine.
“Yes, I’m dating him,” the 25-year-old Spanish tennis pro told ¡Hola! magazine about her relationship with the 24-year-old Greek player. With just five words, she confirmed what many had already suspected. “After breaking up with Cuban model Juan Betancourt earlier this spring, she has found happiness and excitement again with her fellow professional,” the publication writes after Badosa’s brief statement. Badosa and Betancourt were together for a year and a half, and before that, the tennis player had a discreet romance with TV presenter David Broncano in 2020.
Over the past month, Badosa and Tsitsipas have made more headlines for their social media posts together than their respective sports careers. The couple has been seen training in a pool and at the gym, Badosa playfully making a ponytail for Tsitsipas and giving him a kiss on the cheek, dancing, eating ice cream, and dining in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates city where Badosa resides and where they went together after Roland Garros. The videos and photos quickly went viral. In fact, as has happened with some of Hollywood’s most attractive couples (think Bennifer, referring to Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez, or Brangelina, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie), some have already given the young, attractive sports duo a nickname: Tsitsidosa.
Social Media Ablaze with Speculation About Tsitsipas and Badosa’s Relationship
In fact, an Instagram account was created four days ago under the name Tsitsidosa. So far, it only has three posts, but all of them feature photos and images of the couple and their private lives, unrelated to paparazzi or sports photos. The profile has 35,000 followers, including the two main subjects of the story, leading many to believe that the account is managed by the couple themselves. “Best friends and soulmates. Nothing less; nothing more,” reads the account’s description.
There were so many comments and interest on social media about their relationship that on Tuesday, a video from the 2022 Australian Open resurfaced, showing Tsitsipas receiving a package with “Badosa” written on it. After going viral, the tennis player himself shared the video on his Twitter account, writing: “OK, we have to stop. This is too much,” accompanied by a crying-from-laughter emoji. Badosa replied to one of the tweets showcasing the video, saying, “NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! This is insane! The universe was calling…”
In truth, the two athletes have fueled rumors and speculation about their relationship themselves. On Monday, Tsitsipas shared a short video on his Twitter account showing him hugging Badosa after playing a mixed doubles match. “The most memorable moment of my tennis career, no joke. It lives rent-free in my head,” he commented alongside the footage. Badosa responded, saying, “This moment,” followed by three emojis: an excited face, a happy face, and a green heart.
Both athletes have a significant following on social media. Badosa has nearly 139,000 followers on Twitter and 976,000 on Instagram, while Tsitsipas has almost 400,000 followers on Twitter and 1.8 million on Instagram. Their success extends to the tennis courts as well. Stefanos Tsitsipas is currently ranked fifth in the ATP rankings and in 2021 became the first Greek player to reach a Roland Garros final, losing to Novak Djokovic. Tsitsipas began making a name for himself on the circuit in 2018 when he defeated Djokovic in Canada, reaching the Toronto Masters 1000 final, only to lose to Rafa Nadal. In 2019, he defeated Nadal at the Mutua Madrid Open, leaving the Spaniard without a final, as well as winning the prestigious ATP Finals. In 2020, he achieved another victory when, at just 20 years old, he beat Roger Federer in Melbourne.
Meanwhile, Paula Badosa became the first Spanish woman to win Indian Wells in 2021, reaching as high as world number two before settling at her current ranking of 34 in the ATP rankings due to a series of injuries. Badosa is presently recovering from her physical issues, hoping to participate in Wimbledon, which starts in London in early July. However, a more realistic goal may be her return to the courts at the US Open, beginning August 28. Though the pair have yet to claim a Grand Slam title, as Tsitsipas’s latest post suggests, love conquers all.
