Djokovic Advances to Seventh Roland-Garros Final as Alcaraz Succumbs to Injury

In a highly anticipated semifinal duel at Roland-Garros, Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz battled it out for a place in the final. While the match delivered on its promise in the first two sets, Alcaraz ultimately succumbed to injury, leaving Djokovic to claim a 6-3, 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 victory.

The match, which lasted 2 hours and 27 minutes, saw both players reach impressive heights. Tied at one set apiece and 1-1 in the third, Alcaraz’s body suddenly faltered. Stricken with cramps from his right hand down to his calf, the young Spaniard called for medical assistance and consequently conceded the third game and break of serve to Djokovic.

Despite his injury, Alcaraz attempted to stay in the game, shortening rallies as much as possible. However, Djokovic capitalized on the situation and sealed the third set 6-1. The 20-year-old took a seven-minute break between sets, but it wasn’t enough to regain his footing and challenge Djokovic’s dominance.

As the Serbian claimed victory, winning 11 of the final 12 games, the crowd reacted with a mix of admiration and disappointment. Djokovic, encouraged by his performance, let out war cries that were met with boos from some spectators.

The match began with Alcaraz making numerous unforced errors, possibly due to nerves. However, the young prodigy soon found his rhythm, challenging Djokovic and leveling the match.

After taking a six-minute break, Djokovic returned to the court with renewed vigor. Although Alcaraz’s coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero, motioned for his player to complain about Djokovic’s lengthy interlude, Alcaraz remained unfazed.

On Sunday, Djokovic will vie for his 23rd Grand Slam title, potentially surpassing Rafael Nadal at the pinnacle of men’s tennis. He will face the winner of the Alexander Zverev vs. Casper Ruud match.

For Alcaraz, the future is uncertain. His immense talent is clear, but his body has shown signs of wear at just 20 years old. With previous withdrawals from the Australian Open in January and a thigh injury in Rio in February, Alcaraz faces an uphill battle as he continues to make a name for himself in the world of tennis.
