His contributions were not limited to the club; Charlton was also an integral part of the England national team that lifted the FIFA World Cup in 1966, a moment of glory etched in football history.
A man of humility and kindness, Charlton is often regarded as one of the greatest figures to have ever served Manchester United. He made 758 appearances for the club, scoring 249 goals during his tenure. These impressive numbers held the test of time until Ryan Giggs surpassed him in 2008 and Wayne Rooney followed suit nine years later.
Manchester United paid tribute to their beloved legend, stating, “Manchester United is in mourning following the passing of Sir Bobby Charlton, one of the greatest and most revered players in the club’s history.”
Born on October 11, 1937, in Ashington, Northumberland, Charlton’s journey with the club began when he was just a schoolboy in 1953. He was a vital part of the team that secured the English Youth Cup three times consecutively between 1954 and 1956.
Charlton made his first-team debut in 1956, just days before his nineteenth birthday, and marked the occasion with two goals in a 4-2 victory over Charlton Athletic. By the end of the season, he had become an essential member of the team, helping Old Trafford secure its fifth league title.

However, it was a match in the following season that defined Charlton’s life. In February 1958, he scored two goals in a 3-3 draw against Red Star Belgrade in the European Cup quarter-finals. Tragedy struck on the return journey to England as a United plane crashed in the snow-covered Munich airport, claiming the lives of 23 people, including eight of his teammates.
Bobby Charlton survived with minor injuries, but the catastrophe that shattered the young team forced him to mature quickly. He soon became a central figure in the team, which was reconstructed by manager Matt Busby.
The official Manchester United website noted, “After surviving the trauma of the Munich air disaster at the tender age of 20, he played every game as if it were for the teammates he had lost, recovering from his injuries to reach the pinnacle with his club and his country.”
Charlton’s passing leaves a void in the footballing world, but his legacy as an icon of both Manchester United and English football will endure as an inspiration for generations to come.
