Netflix has released a new poster for its highly anticipated live-action adaptation of the beloved animanga series, One Piece, providing fans with a stunning look at the iconic ship, the Going Merry. According to The Direct, the key visual stays faithful to Eiichiro Oda’s original manga and Toei Animation’s anime, featuring the classic vessel of the Straw Hat Pirates in all its glory.
The poster prominently displays a front-angle view of the ship, with the distinctive sheep’s head taking center stage. A bow-side cannon points directly at the viewer, while the iconic Jolly Roger, the symbol of the Straw Hat Pirates, adorns the ship’s sails. To complete the image, a header boldly proclaims, “The pirates are coming.”
Netflix’s Live-Action One Piece Series
The Going Merry holds a special place in the One Piece series as the first official ship of Luffy’s crew. Designed by Merry, the butler of Kaya, the ship was gifted to the Straw Hat Pirates after they saved Syrup Village from the Black Cat Pirates. The new poster, coupled with the recent reveal of Luffy’s straw hat and hand-painted Jolly Roger, provides fans with further insight into the visual style of the upcoming live-action series.
Netflix has a history of adapting anime classics into live-action, albeit with mixed results. Notable projects include the 2017 Death Note film, directed by Adam Wingard, and the 2021 Cowboy Bebop series, helmed by Christopher Yost and Andre Nemec. Both adaptations faced criticism from fans and critics alike. One Piece is not the only project in development at Netflix, as other adaptations like Avatar: The Last Airbender, Yu Yu Hakusho, and Mobile Suit Gundam are also in the works.
The release date for the One Piece live-action series remains unconfirmed but is expected in 2023, with rumors suggesting an August premiere. Fans have voiced concerns over the series’ quality, given Netflix’s track record with previous anime projects. However, Eiichiro Oda, the creator of One Piece, has assured fans that the show will not debut until he is personally satisfied with the adaptation.
In the meantime, the One Piece anime continues to adapt the “Wano Country” arc and can be streamed on Crunchyroll. The manga’s latest arc, “Egghead Island,” is ongoing and available to read on Viz Media with a Shonen Jump subscription.
