In a remarkable show of solidarity, Itziar Ituño, famed for her role in the globally acclaimed series “La Casa de Papel” (Money Heist), recently took part in a demonstration in Guernica, Spain, voicing her support for the Palestinians in Gaza.
During the protest, Ituño, who gained worldwide recognition through the Netflix series that began airing in 2017, vehemently described the ongoing situation in Gaza as a “mass genocide committed by Israeli forces.” Her passionate speech, delivered amidst the crowds in Guernica, was not just a cry for help for Palestine but also a reminder of history’s darker chapters.

Her words echoed through the social media channels as she drew parallels between Guernica’s tragic past and the current situation in Palestine. “From Guernica, the first city to suffer a civilian bombing in history, to Palestine, to the world, we must ensure history and the world do not witness the destruction of another people,” Ituño expressed with conviction.
Further, Ituño called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, condemning the ongoing “massacre committed by the Israeli occupation against Palestinian civilians” and expressing solidarity, saying, “Your dead are our dead, your destroyed homes are our homes, your occupied land is our land, your children are our children.”
The Historical Context of Guernica:
Guernica’s story, which Ituño referenced in her speech, dates back to April 26, 1937, during the Spanish Civil War. The aerial bombardment of the Basque town of Guernica by Germany’s Condor Legion and Italy’s Aviazione Legionaria, at the request of the Spanish Nationalist front, marked one of the first air raids targeting unarmed civilians. Code-named “Operation Rügen,” this attack is historically significant as a grim precursor to modern aerial warfare tactics.
