New COVID-19 Variant “EG.5” Raises Global Concerns Egyptian Health Ministry Reveals Details on Symptoms
The emergence of the new COVID-19 variant, named “EG.5” has sparked global concerns. The Egyptian Ministry of Health recently disclosed details regarding this new variant and its symptoms.
Dr. Hossam Abdel-Ghaffar the official spokesperson for the Ministry of Health stated that the World Health Organization (WHO) is currently monitoring numerous COVID-19 variants. Out of these, three variants identified as XBB.1.16, XBB.1.5, and EG.5 are classified as of interest. Additionally, six other variants are currently under surveillance. Globally the XBB.1.16 variant remains the most prevalent with reported cases in 101 countries since its emergence. It accounted for 25.2% of all reported variants during the 29th epidemiological week from July 17th to 23rd, 2023.
Dr. Hossam Hassani the head of the scientific committee to combat COVID-19 at the Egyptian Ministry of Health revealed further details and symptoms associated with the new variant.
The symptoms include fever, body and muscle aches, fatigue, coughing, sore throat, nasal congestion, and headaches. Although the new variant has greater prevalence it is not more severe or burdensome for those infected.
Epidemiological Situation:
Dr. Hossam Abdel-Ghaffar the Ministry of Health spokesperson previously affirmed that the ministry closely monitors the epidemiological situation of respiratory viruses, including COVID-19. A robust surveillance system is in place, encompassing routine monitoring of acute respiratory illnesses in outpatient clinics and hospitalized cases. Selected sites are also monitored for acute respiratory illnesses and influenza-like illnesses. Additionally genetic sequencing of confirmed COVID-19 samples is continuously conducted at central public health laboratories to track the emergence of new variants.
Overall the new EG.5 variant has triggered global concerns due to its rapid spread. However it does not exhibit increased severity compared to other variants. The Egyptian Ministry of Health continues to actively monitor the epidemiological situation and conduct genetic sequencing to track the emergence of new variants.
