Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood has joined Getafe on a season-long loan, the Spanish club announced on Monday.
The 21-year-old has not played for United since January 2022, when he was arrested on suspicion of rape, assault, and threats to kill. He was later released on bail, but the charges were dropped in February.
Greenwood has been training with United’s reserve team since his release, but he has been unable to find a new club until now.
Getafe are 12th in La Liga after three games, and they are hoping that Greenwood can help them improve their goalscoring record.
The move is seen as a chance for Greenwood to rebuild his career after a difficult few months. He is contracted to United until 2025, but it remains to be seen whether he will be able to return to the club in the future.
In a statement, United said:
“Mason Greenwood has joined La Liga side Getafe CF on a season-long loan, subject to international clearance. The move enables Greenwood to begin to rebuild his career away from Manchester United.”
Greenwood said:
“I am grateful for the opportunity to play for Getafe and I am looking forward to helping the team achieve its goals.”
The move to Getafe is a low-risk option for Greenwood. He will be able to play regular football in a competitive league, and he will be under less pressure than he would be at a bigger club.
If Greenwood can perform well for Getafe, it will give him a chance to reignite his career at United or at another club in the future.
However, the move is also a gamble. Greenwood is still under investigation by the police, and he could still be charged with a crime. If he is found guilty, his career could be over.
Only time will tell whether the move to Getafe is the right one for Greenwood. But it is a chance for him to start rebuilding his career and to prove that he is still a talented footballer.
