Pregnant woman suspected of shoplifting alcohol shot dead by police in Ohio

Ta’Kiya Young, 21, was shot and killed Thursday night by “Blendon” Township police officers in response to reports that she had stolen alcoholic beverages from the grocery store, where Young was pregnant with her third child, who also did not survive the shooting.

What happened with the officers involved?

The officers involved are on paid administrative leave, said Blendon Township Police Chief John Belford in a video statement Friday afternoon.

Store employees later told police that there were several other people who had allegedly stolen items but who had escaped in other cars.

Does shoplifting now mean losing your life?

Young’s death sparked many peaceful vigils in her memory as well as in honor of her unborn daughter.

Local activists and protest groups gathered in Kruger on Friday night and again on Sunday evening to demand justice and accountability for the shooting.
