North Carolina University campus in Chapel Hill has been put on high alert as law enforcement officers deal with an armed and dangerous individual believed to be on or near the campus grounds. The university issued a warning on Monday urging students and staff to exercise caution.

According to CNN, a university spokesperson declined to provide further comments on the incident. Calls to Chapel Hill authorities went unanswered at the time of reporting. Witnesses on campus informed the network that they are currently trapped inside their buildings, witnessing armed officers conducting a thorough search of the campus.
In response to the situation, university police have advised all students to take immediate shelter by entering their buildings and securing windows and doors until further notice, as stated in an email notification.
