In a significant development, the Israeli Foreign Ministry announced that Minister Eli Cohen held a meeting with his Libyan counterpart, Nijla Al-Mangoush, of the Government of National Unity, in Italy last week. This meeting took place despite the absence of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Minister Cohen expressed the immense potential for bilateral relations during his discussions with his Libyan counterpart. He emphasized the importance of the relations with Libya and described the meeting as historic marking a pivotal step towards building stronger ties.
The statement further outlined that the ministers discussed the historical relationship between Israel and Libya as well as the potential for cooperation in various areas including Israeli assistance in humanitarian issues, agriculture, and water management.
The meeting, which took place in Rome, was facilitated by the Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tianni. It is worth noting that this was the first-ever meeting between the foreign ministers of Israel and Libya as reported by the “Yedioth Ahronoth” newspaper.
