Enhancing Writing Quality: Google’s AI-Powered ‘Help Me Write’ Feature for Chromebook Users
Google is gearing up to launch the artificial intelligence feature “Help Me Write,” aimed at enhancing the quality of writing across Chromebook devices.
The company has been integrating AI features into its services for quite some time, but the frequency has increased notably since the emergence of generative AI.
Google is preparing a feature for creative writing and editing supported by artificial intelligence for Chromebook devices, allowing users to enhance the quality of their writing throughout the entire operating system.
Google has previously introduced similar AI-supported writing and editing tools in other applications, such as Gmail and Document Editor, to help users improve their writing.
Recently, the Google Messages application received the Magic Compose feature to assist in composing or editing responses, these developments highlight Google’s growing focus on generative artificial intelligence.
The company has been actively working on an undisclosed project, discovered through Chromium repositories, with various codenames like Orca, Mako, and Manta.
According to information available, Orca is the codename for the new right-click context menu component that activates when editing text anywhere in the operating system, once activated, Orca opens a new contextual user interface known as Mako.
Mako serves three main functions:
1. Rewrite Request: Requests an AI-generated rewritten version of the text you’ve written.
2. Previous Text Queries: Provides a list of examples for prompts, intended to request rewrites in specific styles.
3. Insert Rewritten Text: Inserts the AI-generated text back into the original document.
Additionally, Manta is responsible for sending the original text prompts to Google’s servers, which then send back the requested AI-processed text, this process only occurs with explicit user consent and aligns with Google’s current policy for other AI-based writing tools.
The new feature offers diverse writing modifications, such as summarization, elaboration, rephrasing, formal tone, and emojis, reflecting the options available in the “Help Me Write” AI feature found in Gmail.
This feature is considered valuable due to its integration directly into the operating system, making it accessible across most applications.
Data suggests that this feature is exclusive to Chromebooks Plus, targeting premium Chromebook devices, distinguishing them from more budget-friendly models geared towards students.
