Tragic Plane Collision Claims Lives of Three Ukrainian Pilots during Training Exercise

In a devastating incident three pilots lost their lives after two training aircraft of the IL-39 model collided in mid-air over the central region of Ukraine. The Ukrainian Air Force issued a statement on Saturday confirming the fatalities. The collision occurred on Friday above the Gytomer area, west of the capital city, Kyiv.

Expressing their condolences to the victims’ families, the Air Force described the loss as a painful tragedy that cannot be compensated. An investigation is currently underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the accident. This incident comes at a time when Ukraine is putting significant efforts into rapidly training its air crews on operating F-16 fighter jets.

Recently, the United States announced their plan to begin training Ukrainian pilots to fly F-16s, starting in September. Several countries, including Norway, the Netherlands, and Denmark, have pledged to provide Kyiv with a number of these aircraft. A coalition of 11 nations will be responsible for training these Ukrainian pilots.

Officials remain hopeful that Ukrainian pilots will be fully prepared by early 2024. This training program aims to strengthen Ukraine’s aviation capabilities and enhance their readiness in utilizing advanced fighter aircraft.
