Sony has unveiled a new handheld gaming device called the “PlayStation Portal,” which allows remote gameplay of PlayStation 5 games.
The PlayStation Portal device is designed by Sony to resemble the DualSense controller, featuring a screen in the middle and control buttons on the sides.
This new handheld gaming device can be wirelessly connected to a PlayStation 5 through Wi-Fi, and using the “Remote Play” feature, users can play the installed games on it.
The PlayStation Portal device requires a Wi-Fi connection with a speed of at least 5 megabits per second, Sony suggests a 15 megabits per second connection for the best gaming experience on the device.
Sony noted that the owners of the handheld device can only play games installed on the PlayStation 5, the device does not support cloud gaming and cannot be used to play games without a Wi-Fi connection.
The PlayStation Portal device features an 8-inch screen with a resolution of 1080 pixels and a refresh rate of 60 hertz, the control buttons on the sides of the screen resemble the DualSense controller, including its unique features like touch responsiveness and adaptive feedback effects.
The device comes with external speakers and a 3.5mm headphone jack for wired headphones, bluetooth is not supported, but it is replaced by the “PlayStation Link” technology, Sony’s new wireless communication standard, this technology aims to reduce latency and maintain audio quality when wirelessly connecting to PlayStation devices.
