Liverpool Midfielder’s Red Card Appeal Successful After Contentious Decision

Liverpool Football Club announced on Tuesday that the red card given to midfielder Alexis Mac Alister has been overturned following a successful appeal to the Football Association. The red card was shown during Liverpool’s 3-1 victory over Bournemouth in the second round of the English Premier League and the decision was met with controversy.

Mac Alister was sent off in the 58th minute for a strong challenge on Ryan Christie. However the severity of the tackle was questioned, with even Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola stating after the match that “the foul did not seem to warrant a red card”.

In response to the appeal, the Independent Disciplinary Committee issued a statement declaring that the suspension for Mac Alister has been cancelled. There were allegations of a wrongful dismissal leading to the decision to rescind the punishment.

With 4 points from two matches Liverpool currently sits in fifth place in the Premier League standings. Their next fixture will see them travel to face Newcastle United on Sunday.
