Ohio resident Robert Greathouse didn’t expect to get a college degree after his last semester at the University of Akron 30 years ago, “It wasn’t part of the plan“, he says, But he was there, in his hat and gown, huddled with his family and friends in the Pochtel College of Arts and Sciences.
The events of his life in the army so far:-
Greathouse, at 93, became the oldest University of Akron alumnus of the ceremony, earning his Associate of Art Studies degree 65 years after he entered his freshman class at the college.
Greathouse was an aircraft mechanic during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1954, The following year, he used that experience to get a job as an electronics technician at Goodyear Aerospace, then attended college and focused on learning what he needed for the position he wanted rather than a degree, Saying this degree was not the plan.” “The plan was to get a better job.”
Inspiration for the President of the University:-
University of Akron President Gary L. Miller told Greathouse that he was an inspiration to “everyone in this room”.
The youngest daughter explains the reason for her father’s obtaining a university degree:-
Cincinnati resident Jane Ruching, the youngest of two Great House daughters, began the degree process after her father suffered a medical accident. While searching for records, she found her father’s transcripts from the University of Akron, which indicated he had received a large number of training courses.
I sent an email to the University of Akron’s registrar, who contacted Ann Usher, associate dean of Pochtel College.
“They had his script,” she said.
Asher discovered that Greathouse had accumulated enough credits for an Associate of Art Studies degree.
Fast-forward to Monday, when, 65 years in the making, Miller delivered his testimony to Greathouse.
