Defenders with €117.5 million| Where did Manchester City spend more than a billion euros under Guardiola?

 

Manchester City announced today, Saturday, the resolution of the deal No. 45 in the era of Spanish coach Pep Guardiola, away from free contracts.

Pep Guardiola has been at Manchester City since 1 July 2016, and the Spaniard completed his seventh consecutive year at the Etihad Stadium this summer.

Guardiola has the full confidence of Manchester City’s owners, as he is used to getting everything he asks for in both the summer and winter transfer markets.

Where did Manchester City spend more than a billion euros under Guardiola?

With Spanish coach Pep Guardiola, City played 413 games in all official competitions, during which he won 14 titles varied between domestic and continental.

Pep’s achievements at Manchester City required the disbursement of almost one billion and 360 million euros.

City spend Pep Guardiola’s 15th transfer market between summer and winter, having spent less than €120m so far in the summer of 2023.

City’s owners brought in Croatian Mateo Kovacic for €30 million and Joško Gvardiol for €90 million.

Back in the 2016-17 season, Guardiola’s first at Manchester City, the club spent the equivalent of €216 million.

The following season 2017-18 was the most spent in Pep Guardiola’s era with €317.5 million while 2018-19 was the lowest ever, at just €78 million.

In 2019-20, City paid €166.8 million, then €173.4 million in 2020-2021, and 138.9 million in 2021-2022, before settling for €152 million in 2022-2023.

Aside from the free deals in which Manchester City did not pay a single euro, how did Guardiola spend more than one billion and 360 million?

In goalkeeping, only 3 players arrived at 64.82 million euros, while the most expensive deal was the contract with Brazilian Ederson with 40 million, and in defense, Manchester City resolved 19 deals for 608 million euros, the most expensive defensive deal, concluded by City on Saturday by signing Croatian Gvardiol with 90 million.

At midfield between 6th, 8th and 10th positions, only 9 players were signed for a total of 202 million euros, with Calvin Phillips with 49 million euros being the most expensive.

In attack, the Champions League champions were content with 14 players for €467.5 million.

The most expensive deal in Manchester City’s history was sealed when he signed Englishman Jack Grealish from Aston Villa for €117.5 million.

Based on Manchester City’s deals between 2016 and 2023, it appears that Guardiola spent just over 45% of total expenses on the defensive line.

The least line at Manchester City to have the support of the 52-year-old coach was just over 4% of goalkeeping.

In the middle, the rate spent was 15% of the total, while the amount of money paid to support Manchester City’s attack increased to 34%.
