From Alexandria to Silicon Valley: The Journey of Egypt’s First Engineer at Tesla

In a testament to the global reach of talent, Jalal Salama, an Egyptian engineer, has made his mark at Tesla, one of the world’s leading electric vehicle and clean energy companies.

His journey, which began in the classrooms of the Arab Academy for Science and Technology in Abu Qir, Alexandria, has led him to the forefront of technological innovation in Silicon Valley.

Salama’s path to Tesla was not a straight line, he was first approached by the company in 2015, but he declined, feeling he was not yet ready for the challenge.

In 2018, Tesla reached out again, but Salama felt his skills were not yet up to par, however, when the company approached him for the third time in 2020, Salama felt he had honed his skills enough to make a significant contribution and accepted the offer.

Salama’s story is a testament to the importance of preparation and self-improvement, initially offered a position as a junior engineer, his continuous efforts to enhance his skills led to him being offered a senior engineer position by the third offer.

A proud graduate of the Arab Academy for Science and Technology, Salama credits the institution, particularly the informatics department, for nurturing his competitive spirit and providing him with the practical skills that complemented his theoretical knowledge.

His story serves as an inspiration for aspiring engineers worldwide, demonstrating that with persistence, continuous learning, and a drive for excellence, anyone can make their mark on the global stage.
