Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) are determined to pursue Mohamed Salah this summer as they prepare to replace departing superstars Lionel Messi and Neymar, according to former footballer Robbie Fowler.
Messi has already left for Inter Miami, and rumors suggest that PSG is seeking a potential buyer for Neymar, with Manchester United and Chelsea both linked to the Brazilian forward.
Fowler expressed his concerns that Liverpool may face difficulties retaining Salah, as a heated contest for the Egyptian star and fellow Premier League goalscorer Harry Kane is expected to ensue.
With Karim Benzema’s move to Saudi Arabia, Real Madrid is also anticipated to join the race for a top striker. Fowler assessed the available options in his column for the Mirror: “Lewandowski looks like he’ll finish his career at Barcelona, while no way can I see Haaland or Mbappe being available this summer, or any time soon. Which leaves Kane and Salah…and Neymar, if anyone is daft enough to take a punt on a player who looks like he’s had enough of football.”
Fowler pointed out that four of the world’s largest clubs are seeking one thing – a guarantee of goals – and both Kane and Salah have consistently delivered in English football over the past seven years.
He wrote: “There’s going to be a helluva scrap. I only mention Salah because I’ve thought for a few months now that he could be targeted this summer, and it wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest if both Madrid and PSG come in for him – with the French club nailed on in my opinion to try and get him.”
Despite the impending battle, Fowler offered some reassurance to Liverpool fans, noting that Salah’s long contract and the club’s recent history of not yielding to outside pressure should provide comfort.
However, Fowler did express concern over Salah’s end-of-season statement, which seemed to resemble the words of his agent more than the player himself: “His statement at the end of the season declaring how devastated he was they didn’t finish in the top four, and there’s no excuse for it, was a worry.”
Fowler concluded that PSG will undoubtedly be targeting high-profile signings to replace Messi and possibly Neymar as well: “PSG have to bring in a big, big name to replace Messi this summer, and probably Neymar too. So they’ll be swinging big – and they could have a real go at Kane too.”
