Amidst Rising Tensions, Israeli Hostage Families Demand Negotiations: A Plea for Peace over Retaliation

In a deeply emotional gathering in Tel Aviv, families of Israeli hostages, held captive since the Hamas attack on October 7, voiced their frustration and anguish. Noam Peri, daughter of hostage Haim Peri, implored the Israeli government, “We only receive bodies. We urge you to cease the fighting and start negotiations.” This statement followed the tragic news of three hostages being mistakenly killed during an Israeli military operation in Gaza.

The families’ outcry resonates with a broader call for a strategic shift away from military confrontation. Robbie Chen, father of 19-year-old hostage Itai Chen, expressed the uncertainty and fear permeating their lives, likening it to a grim game of Russian roulette. He questioned the government’s approach, noting the failure of ground operations to safely return all captives.

The initial Hamas assault on Israel on October 7 led to approximately 250 hostages being taken, resulting in around 1,140 fatalities, predominantly civilians, according to Israeli figures. In response, Israel vowed to dismantle Hamas and recover the hostages, launching extensive attacks on Gaza. However, the Hamas government reports a staggering 18,800 fatalities from the conflict, with a significant toll on women and children.
