Manchester United and Northern Ireland have suffered a significant setback as defender Jonny Evans has been ruled out for the “next few weeks” due to a thigh strain.

Evans sustained the injury during the first half of United’s recent 4-3 Champions League defeat to FC Copenhagen. His absence adds to an already extensive injury list at Old Trafford, with defenders Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia, and midfielder Casemiro also currently sidelined.

The 35-year-old’s injury also means he will miss Northern Ireland’s crucial Euro 2024 qualifiers against Finland and Denmark. Northern Ireland, currently fifth in Group H with six points, will face Finland next Friday before hosting Denmark on November 20.

Evans had only recently returned to United on a one-year deal in September, eight years after leaving Old Trafford. He had made a solid start to his second spell at the club, starting five Premier League games.

United, currently in eighth place in the Premier League with 18 points from 11 matches, will next host promoted Luton Town on Saturday. They will be hoping to bounce back from their Champions League defeat and extend their unbeaten run in the league to four games.
