First Look at “Inside Out 2”: A New Emotion Joins the Gang

The much-anticipated trailer for “Inside Out 2”, the sequel to Pixar’s 2015 hit animated film “Inside Out”, has finally been released. The original film, which centered on the emotional journey of 11-year-old Riley (voiced by Kaitlyn Dias), introduced audiences to the five emotions inside her mind: Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Disgust (Mindy Kaling), Fear (Bill Hader), and Anger (Lewis Black). The sequel introduces a new emotion, the frazzled, orange Anxiety.

However, due to reported salary disputes, Bill Hader and Mindy Kaling will not be reprising their roles as Fear and Disgust. Instead, Tony Hale and Liza Lapira will be stepping into these roles.

The first film followed Riley’s struggle to adjust to her new life in San Francisco after moving from Minnesota. The emotional turmoil of growing up and adapting to a new environment led her on a journey that risked her relationships with friends and family. The film depicted Joy and Sadness embarking on an adventure through Riley’s mind, learning to work together to help Riley navigate her emotions and settle into her new home.

“Inside Out” was met with critical acclaim upon its release, even bagging the 2016 Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Film critic Peter Debruge, writing for Variety, praised the film as an “elegant and iconic visual metaphor for understanding [audiences’] own emotions, and empathizing with others’.”

The sequel was first announced at Disney’s D23 Expo in 2022, with Kelsey Mann taking the director’s chair and Meg LeFauve, co-writer of the first film, returning as the writer.

“Inside Out 2” is set to hit theaters on June 14, 2024, almost nine years after the release of the first film. Fans eagerly awaiting the sequel can watch the newly released trailer below.
