In a landmark medical breakthrough, surgeons in New York have successfully completed the first-ever full eye transplant. The operation, a 21-hour long procedure, marks a significant milestone in medical history. The surgical team at Langone Health Medical Center reported that six months post-operation, the transplanted eye showed signs of health, including properly functioning blood vessels and a retina in good condition. Previously, only corneal transplants were possible. Aaron James, a 46-year-old former soldier from Arkansas, underwent this groundbreaking procedure. James, who survived an electrical accident damaging the left side of his face, including his nose, mouth, and left eye, initially had the eye transplant as part of a facial transplant for cosmetic reasons.
However, currently, there is no connection between the transplanted eye and the brain through the optic nerve. The surgeons injected stem cells from the donor’s spinal cord into the optic nerve during the transplant, hoping to replace damaged cells and protect the nerve.
Rodriguez highlighted that a living eye transplant opens up numerous possibilities. Other research teams are developing methods to connect nerve networks in the brain with non-seeing eyes, such as introducing electrical probes to restore vision.

Although James, who retained sight in his right eye, was aware he might not regain vision in the transplanted eye, he hoped his participation would pave the way for future advancements. “This is how it starts. I hope this opens a new pathway,” he said.
Rodriguez remains optimistic about the potential for vision restoration, stating, “No one can claim he will see. But they can’t claim he won’t. At this stage, we are pleased with the highly technical outcome achieved.”
