A radio presenter was killed during a live broadcast on the social media app “Facebook” after a man shot him inside the studio.
The Associated Press agency revealed new details about this incident, which took place in southern Philippines.
The global agency confirmed that a number of viewers of the live broadcast that the Filipino presenter was conducting witnessed the killing, where a man claimed to be a follower of the program to be able to sneak into the studio, and shot the presenter Juan Chumailon.
Police response
The Philippine police confirmed that the attacker managed to steal a gold necklace from the journalist after killing him, before fleeing with another person, who was waiting for him outside Chumailon’s house, in Calala in Misamis Occidental province.
The Philippine police have launched investigations, as it has not been confirmed yet whether the 57-year-old journalist had a relationship with the killer or not, as the Philippines is classified as the most dangerous country in the world in the field of journalism and investigative journalism, according to the Associated Press agency.
Philippine President
Ferdinand Marcos, President of the Philippines, confirmed his condemnation of the incident, where he ordered that the perpetrators be arrested and brought to justice.
Marcos stressed in a statement he issued on the social media platform “X” earlier and “Twitter” currently, that he condemns the killing of Juan Chumailon in the strongest terms, pointing out that attacks on journalists will not be tolerated in our democracy, and that those who threaten press freedom will face a strong response to their actions.
Response of the Philippine Journalists Association
Meanwhile, the Philippine Journalists Association confirmed that Chumailon is the 199th journalist to be killed in the Philippines since the mid-1980s.
The association also condemned what the Filipino journalist was exposed to and demanded that the perpetrators be brought to justice.
