Microsoft has officially announced a substantial update for its cloud file storage service, OneDrive, which includes improvements to the user interface, user experience, and the addition of AI-related features.
According to Microsoft’s official blog post, this new update marks the third version of OneDrive, known as OneDrive 3.0, the primary focus of this update is to make it easier to find stored files and leverage artificial intelligence mechanisms to customize the user experience and suggest relevant files.
Microsoft has introduced a Shared section in OneDrive, allowing users to see files that others have shared with them and understand the sharing settings. Additionally, a new section called “People View” has been added, enabling users to view files shared with others.
Users now have the ability to customize folder colors for easier identification and can open files with their preferred applications installed on their computers, Microsoft has also introduced a new section dedicated to viewing photos and videos, the ability to add files to favorites, and simplified file sorting by type, among other features.
Microsoft has deeply integrated its new AI-powered personal assistant, “Copilot,” into the OneDrive service. This integration aims to simplify file access through advanced natural language search, contextual file search, and the display of file summaries without the need to open them. Copilot will suggest next steps, such as creating a folder or sharing with specific individuals. Copilot will be available in OneDrive for Microsoft 365 subscribers by the end of this year.
Microsoft plans to roll out more new features in the coming year, including an Offline Mode for accessing files when an internet connection is unavailable.
